    Default Beware the enemy!

I found this article and thought you guys might enjoy it. Who knew that shaving cream was so.... evil!

    http://www.lewrockwell.com/tucker/tucker65.html

I found it while I was looking for methods for making shaving cream ala the stuff we'd get in tubs (not the stuff in aerosol cans). I'm very interested in learning more about it!

Nice to hear, but buddy's logic goes out the window at one point:

"There are many thing that are true – the state is a parasite on society, private property would solve most social problems, rock music is tedious and stupid – but are nonetheless not generally known or applied. "

I don't even want to begin to fathom the depth of fallacious imaginings necessary to lead one to the point of accepting these opinions as facts.

No lie. This guy makes it sound as if shaving cream is destroying society! I mean, he's really on a mission. When I first started shaving, at first, I tried it for a while without cream. Granted, what hair I had to shave was pretty light compared to what's in store now, but it still was uncomfortable as all get out! Maybe after your face has calloused over it wouldn't be so bad, but I don't think I want to go there, especially with a straight.

Well, we're using REAL soaps and creams, not the stupid foam stuff so we get the benefits. When i was using disposables I discovered the truth about the foam and simply stopped, preferring to use water only instead. I'm sure with diligent prep that water only would work with a straight, but the creams are just so much more practical even with running water.

All I know is that I don't like the "Goo in a Can", when I started using a brush and shave soap I gave up the goo to my wife as she still likes it... yuck!

Interesting read but I like a good reason than just an opinion...

My first step towards straight razor shaving actually began with giving up the plastic shaving gel chemical goop and using good ol' Williams shaving soap instead with my multi-blade cartridge razor. I immediately got better shaves, so I took it to the next level and started straight razor shaving. By the way, I still like Williams, even though I've used a bunch of other expensive creams and soaps. It's inexpensive ($0.75 at Wal-Mart), has no strong smell and works pretty darned well.

As far as the water-only thing, I do that for final touch-ups on a couple of tiny spots (usually one or two whiskers here and there) while using a magnifiying mirror. I don't think I'd want to do that with my entire face, though.

I agree with that guy [Racket Guy], from his perspective anyway. He's acting out, acting out of frustration. Someone should shoot him an email to introduce him to the world of straight shaving and it's abundance of great shave soaps.

What got me started with a mug and brush was the fact that the goo in the can is very expensive compared to a cake of Williams. I was using about a can a month and a cake of soap will last me months. Not too mention the quality of the shave. Now that I use straights and several fragrances of quality soaps and creams, I ENJOY shaving. My wife has dumped the can and is using the mug and brush. I have used just water in a pinch or rush touch up but I enjoy the full classic shave experience.

well i'll take his side just for the sake of making things interesting. while using plain water might be a little uncomfortable, one could use oil instead of shave cream/coap. After all, you can buy shave-oil (i can find one by Cromwell-Cruthers locally) which is described as "an alternative shave method". This is all thats in it: Grape Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, Safflower Oil, Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, Sandalwood Oil, Menthol, Aloe Vera & Vitamin E Acetate. If a person were so inclined they could easily find these ingredients and make their own. I've heard it doesn't actually do too shabby of a job either. I've personally never used it but i'm considering it for varieties sake.
