lather test
Is there a lather test used by people, like the HHT or TPT?

Thanked: 1587Hey Matt,
Do you mean a test to decide how good your lather is? I build a lather in a mug by adding a little water at a time until I get a fluffy mirange-type consistency. I guess you could lift your brush up to see if the lather stays on the brush...
But fluffy mirange is only a personal preference. You could go a bit runnier or stiffer I guess. As long as the lather allows adequate lubrication throughout the shave it should be fine.

I have been doign that but seem to be getting a lather that is too wet once applied or too dry.

Too dry: Add water
Too wet: Hmmmm, blow dryer?
Sorry, smart*ss mood this morning.
I build my lather on my face and always seem to start out a little on the dry side. I just dip the brush in my hot water mug and keep at it until it's where I want it.

I have to go with James on the meringue consistency. That is where I try to get all my lathers (latherings?) before I put it on my face. It has always provided me with plenty of lubrication, but also like he said, its a personal preference for one consistency over another. As long as ti works for and you like it, then go with that. Try other methods to make sure that there isn't another out there that you like better, then just work through them until you find the one method that works best for you.

Thanked: 0I sometimes actually just grab a little bit and rub it against my fingers until it feels like the right consistency, but if the lather's looking like meringue with soft peaks on it, it's usually good to go.

Thanked: 1587Matt,
Not the greatest of photos, but this is about the consistency I go for:

You don't need a three inch thick layer of soap on your face just enough to lubricate. As long as it doesn't dry out and stays wet its fine. Everythiong else is personal pref. Some like it wetter some dryer, some thicker some thinner. There is no right or wrong.

If the lather gets too soupy or runny, just get some of the lather onto your brush and shake it into the sink. Work it up again and the next batch should get thicker.
