Soaps here. I find I can get a bit closer and better feedback with the soaps. On weekends I will use creams for a luxurious change of pace though.

Tried some C&E Nomad cream I bought on Friday this weekend. Seems to work well, but still need to work on my lathering skills.

I usually put a small dab of the cream on a wet brush and lather on my face. It seems to work well for me that way. I have no desire to have something else to clean, which is why I haven't gotten a moss scuttle.

That's why I stopped using mine. One more thing to clean every morning.

Soap or cream? ... Personal preference.

Generally, creams tend to give more buffering between blade and skin, and the soaps a closer more lubricated shave. Try some of each (the best of each) and see what suits you best.
