Both. Depends on what soap or what cream. The choice will also determine which brush I use.

Really up to who s doing it, 45 years ago installed with an old spice puck and mug, but soon I preferred lathering on my face.

Skip forward 4 years ago , found this site then tried scuttles. Still prefer my face lathering. I know plenty who don't shave without a mug or scuttle, there's a lot to be said for the full treatment. Myself I shave everyday so I just want to get the face clean. You will have to decide what's your preference. Tc

Bowl or face, it doesn't really matter, you can build great lather either way, if the soap is of decent quality. Tc

I do a little of both really. I keep a puck in a mug and load the brush for longer than some so that the lather is already starting to look good. Then I take it to my face. If I am using a cream I start the process in a bowl or scuttle then move it to my face.

    It works well for me.

Makes no big difference so it really is a personal choice in the end. What ever works best for you.

Personally, I grew up face lathering. Either I loaded the brush with soap from a puck or put a dollop of cream on the brush and built the lather on my face. Tried a fancy modern scuttle to make warm lather in after loading the brush with soap from a puck or putting a dollop of cream in the scuttle bowl. Then applying the lather from the scuttle bowl to my face. Decided it did nothing for me except adding another piece of gear to clean up and then store somewhere so stopped bowl lathering in a modern scuttle.

Try it both ways and see which you like/works best for you.

I do both. Some days ill build my lather in a bowl then brush it on and shave. Other times i build lather in a bowl and finish building the lather on my face to get a little scrub time on the skin. Other times i just go right to the face and use the bowl just to soak my brush while showering.

Its all personnal preferance. If you can build the same lather no matter how you go about it is the trick.
    It's just Sharpening, right?
