Thanked: 110Soap Tiers
This is more for Obie but sure a lot of you guys know the answer... When looking at Soaps ive never used or heard of i always check Obie's tier ranking. For me its about 95% to what mine would be. But I keep forgetting to ask why there is a Special Tier for MWF and Tabac? I could use either for my only shave soap forever if I needed to... Thanks fella's. SMW

they are in a tier,, mostly upper 2d tier,, lower tier 1. they are very respected and could be used exclusively by most. even Obie would agree i,m sure on these 2.

Probably because of their unusual combination of high-quality performance at quite an attractive price.

Thanked: 174Obie's own reply in his legendary thread:
"I have created a special category to highlight some legends without which no shave den is complete. Obviously, they are quality soaps or creams that deserve their own category. For me, Mitchell's Wool Fat and Tabac are a perfect fit here, as I think every shave den should have them. I've had these soaps for years and will continue to do so into the next century."

I have always enjoyed reading Obie's soap thread, although he makes it clear that these are only his impressions, and that they are prone to change. Newbies on other forums often start a thread that asks for people to list their tope five soaps. Although I'm tired of the same question being repeated infinitum, I also like to see how my choices change over time. Obie's tiers are much more comprehensive, and I'm always moving my choices up and down the tiers. Sometimes I think a soap is great, but just get tired of it after awhile, and sometimes I just have a different opinion of it after I've had more experience using it. Unfortunately, it's not often that a new soap will perform so well for me that it moves all the other soaps down a notch, but it does happen. What's important is that we enjoy our shaves, and I really don't care which tier my favorites are in.

Yep, What they said.
Also when Obie is in his prime and feeling well, the list will change. Keep and eye on it. Sometimes a soap drops a tier and another goes up. As he said, its his opinion. But most of us agree with him. Imagine the size of HIS soap closet! It's just Sharpening, right?

Gentlemen,
Forgive me for being late to this thread. In the hospital, I could not pull in SRP. Go figure. Here are a few thoughts:
I have moved OneBlade shave cream and Oleo and Wholly Kaw shave soaps into the First Tier. These are exceptionally good artisan products and I think deserve to be in the First Tier. I especially like the OneBlade cream, which in some way reminds me of the Castle Forbes lavender cream.
Tabac and Mitchell's Wool Fat, two memorable shave soaps, should be in their own category, I thought. Thus the Special Tier. No, they are not the best shave soaps made — if one can claim such distinction — but should be staples in any shave den. I especially love the fragrance of Tabac; it's soapy and clean, and quite refreshing.
I am almost tempted to put Proraso in this category, too; it is a good basic product that meets all the lathering requirements. Of course, the scent is not for everyone, but the cream should be staple in every shave den.
