Thread: slow sink drain problem

Has anyone had any sink drainage problem because of shaving soap
lather. Since I started using Cremo I think it might be causing a problem with the sink drainage. I am going to try some Draino but I am curious if anyone else has anything like plumbing problems caused by
thick lather.

About twice a year I have to de soap the bottom of my sink stopper. And by bottom, I mean the bottom that is down in the drain pipe.

Try running hot water down the drain for a couple of minutes. Do that after each shave.
Yeah, you may need the drano to unclog it, but the hot water after each shave helps to
prevent a next time.

Yep... I have to use Draino a couple times a year. I think the shaving soap + shaved whiskers makes for clogging.

If soap clogs your sink you are not using enough water.

Helps to run hot water to loosen/soften things up and then plug the drain and let the sink fill it then let it out all at once.

Might take a couple of times but works without chemicals.

Don't wit until the drain plugs before you clean it because then you need a snake!

Yup, if I think the drain is slowing down some liquid plumber puts it right.

Me too. It gets slimy in those pipes then whiskefs stick to it. Ive never had it plug up but slow down for sure. I make it a habbit to take all sink traps apart and clean then every spring.

I never use any Draino. I try to run real hot water down as often as I can as my bathroom faucet has water restrictors so you don't get a lot of water.

If you or anyone else has long hair, it complicates things a bit as the hair hangs up and helps the build up.

This is the set up my bathroom sink uses. The area in red is where my drain plugs up. All you need to do to unplug it is to unscrew the nut where the red arrow is pointing, then pull the rod out, remove the drain plug, clean everything up, then reinstall everything.

NOTE: Something like a baby bottle brush is handy to clean the inside of the drain pipe.

Just make sure to make a mental note, take a picture or draw a picture of how the rod attaches in the circle in blue.



Easy, peasy--

I have double sinks in the master bath. I use draino or equivalent 3-4 times a year in the wife's sink, maybe once every other year in mine. Long hair is the culprit, never soap or whiskers... My experience. I use 2+ bottles a year in my daughters' sink.

Mine gets restricted like Cudda and cau. Its the wife's hair that's always the culprit. I can lift the stopper from the drain, and pull out the plug with a pick.
