One thing that makes me confident is that, apparently, there is no animal fat involved... that's what freacked me out on other soap recepies: the use of lard! I don't want to put lard on my face!

Theres not lard in soap. Its an ingredient in soap but soap doesnt have lard. Soap is the resulting chemical that occurs when lard us mixed with lye. If the proportions are correct, neither lye nor lard are left, they both turn into soap.
