    Default Regular shaving foam

I know it isn't advisable, just just out of curiosity can you use a straight razor with the regular shaving foam/gel you get in a pressurized can from the supermarket/drug store?

Sure you can,in fact,it may be a good idea for brand new str8 shavers.Especially the ones that start out as a gel, then go foamy(like edge). It gives the skin a little extra glide and protection. However,I think it's a good idea to soak the whiskers, either in a hot shower or with a hot wet towel prior to shaving,no matter what you shave with.

    .
When I started shaving I was told to have a hot shower, or wash my face with hot water, or use a hot towel, so I've never really considered not doing one of those things.
I actually was watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy while I had breakfast (syndication of Australian TV), when I heard that advice fist. Hahaha

You could, I don't know why you would want to.

Personally I'd rather use a Bic single blade disposable with decent soap than that crud with a straight. I'd get a better shave too.

Try the soaps by the soapmistress at TGQ. Colleen is a member on SRP: username 'churley'. She has a vendor thread.

Honestly Guybrush, try them and you'll wonder why you ever used anything else.....

Sorry, but I disagree. I've only been using straights for about 5 years but I've been using a brush and soap for more than 25. Even using a crap $5 boar brush and a puck of Williams shaving soap, I got better lather, better "glide and protection," and much less irritation than I did when I used the canned stuff, including Edge for sensitive skin.

In my opinion, whether you decide to stick with straights or not, as long as you are wet shaving you are always better off making your own lather with a brush. That applies with a $5 brush and a $1 soap just the same as it does with a $250 brush and a $25 soap.

+1 that with the provision that not all good lather/cream is made with a brush. Just most of it. LUSH makes products that are awesome and don't require a brush. Thoms of Maine recommends lathering with your fingertips in your palm. None of the good options include an aerosol can, though. None!

Thanks guys for the info, I’m new to straight shaving as well, and this group has such a wealth of knowledge!
