    Default Washing Old Spice Mug

I just got an old spice mug on ebay. I can't tell for sure, but I think the two ships are decals of some sort. Is it okay to stick these puppies in the dish washer, or is there a risk the decals or whatever the medium of the ships is will come off in the wash? Mine's pretty grimy.

They are probably fired on glass transfers. Not really decals, but similar.

Maybe, it would probably be better to hand wash. This is the same method that is used to put designs and or pictures on glass. Examples include old soda bottles and promotional shot glasses. It is similar to the glazes used on pottery, but the design is not painted on, but transfered as one piece. It is set with heat which fuses it to the underling material. Dishwasher detergent is very caustic (it actually contains lye) so it actually attacks glass and glass like glazes. Thus, over time, it will probably remove this type of transfer (over time, it will also etch glass). One time probably won't hurt it, but to be safe, I would hand wash.

I'm sorry, but what's wrong with handwashing ? It's definately much more thourough than a dishwasher, and perfectly safe.

Last year I washed my Old Spice mug, and when I dried it, I got careless, and it fell out of my hands and broke.

I have one, from approx 1945 or so... I have used and abused that thing with abandon. Dishwasher, hand scrubbing with scouring pad, etc.

So far mine looks good as new.

I did this to a plate. However, it was treated as a one-off and I'm still allowed to do the washing up.
