I mostly use Col Conk's soap, and I've seen that it definitely goes bad over time as I use it. My theory is that there's some sort of volatile in the soap that's evaporating. I rarely get through an entire puck of it before I feel it's time to throw it away and get a new one. I've been looking for some sort of shaving mug that seals to see if that makes a difference.

Are you kidding? They have found pucks of Col. Conk buried with neanderthal men and the anthropologists were able to lather right up with it and shave in the field.

I've found some soaps can get some bugs on them and most will loose their scent to a degree if left out uncovered over long periods.

cream might change consistancy but usually can be revived.

pucks can be revived by adding warm-hot water and leaving overnight
