Thread: Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a very interesting substance. You might like to try using it during shaving. Put a generous amount in the beard area beneath your shaving cream. It moisturizes, helps prevent razor burn, and leaves your skin feeling soft.

There are other uses of course. For example, after dispensing moisturizer onto your palm, add a few drops (1 to 5 drops) of jojoba oil to make it into an exceptional moisturizer or use a drop of jojoba oil a finger and apply to the lips as a lip balm or you can mix a few drops of jojoba oil into your hair conditioner to promote hair growth.

From a technical viewpoint its actually not even an oil but a wax.

Expert say Jojoba Oil most closely resembles your serebum (spelling) the oil secreted by your skin. That is why it is a very good moisturizing

Also Jojoba oil is used as a replacement for whale oil and it is in many regards superior to sperm oil for many applications. It is very stable and does not become rancid even after long periods of storage. It remains liquid in very low temperature and therefore is an excellent lubricant in machinery used in extremely cold climates.

I love the stuff. I put in (moderately) on everything. I buzzed my head, and used it after showering to control dandruff, I use it on my hands as a refresher in the dry vegas climes, and I smother my gut strings with it. Nothing works quite like it. Except argan oil, a fair if expensive counterpart oil to the jojoba wax.

what does jojoba do to the strings? How does it affect the sound?

Is it comedogenic? I have a small bottle but don't use it that often. Since I've also heard it's similar to sebum, I've hesitated slathering it on my face.

No it can't be.
Only oils that harden up, can be comedogenic if anything like that ever exists.

It is absorbed by the gut tissue, increases mass and flexibility, helps keep the stuff from drying out. It helps the string slide off the finger very naturally, and gives the strings a more supple feel under the fingers. The sound is pretty much the same except for a cleaner 'smack' at the beginning of a note. Also, more mass and/or moisture adds a stronger fundamental, so the string will be not louder, but more solid sounding.
I mostly use it to keep the strings from getting to dry (a constant battle in the desert) to keep their life and supple feel. Think baseball glove...
