Oil
This is a question for anyone who knows about preshave oil? I have sensitive skin and am very afraid to use it. Anyone want to shed some light on this subject??

Thanked: 488I can't say from expereince but many have posted that they don't really care for a pre shave oil. The reports have been that it interferes with thew shave soap or cream especially. That and they seem to rather expensive for a small quantity.
I found that lots of hot water and a good face wash does the same thing. You can also follow a good cleansing with an application of soap or cream then a towel dipped in hot water and wrung out then placed on your face for two minutes followed by a final application of your cream or soap. It's not only effective but very relaxing.

I used to use one, but found that with good face prep and proper lathering the pre-shave oil wasn't adding any value to the shave.

Thanked: 15I used a preshave oil for about a month and then stopped. The idea of providing a surface on which the razor will glide smoothly is a good one; however, I didn't find that the use of the oil was any better than a good prep. Additionally, I didn't like the feel of the oil on my skin. Contrary to some posts, I didn't find that it significantly interferred with the lather. If you are considering the use of oil, I would recommend passing and spend a little extra time prepping with a warm towel prior to your shave.

I am by no means qualified to answer regarding shaving as today was my second shave. I bought a NOS Shumate Tungsten, honed it on 8000 waterstone, stropped it on a belt, and used it today for my shave. It's a level 2 HHT.
Anywho, on recommendation by the local herbalist guru gal, I made an oil from a bottle of jojoba and infused it with calendula. This will be good for you face whether or not it makes for a smoother shave.
No cuts and it's definitely closer than disposable.
Thank you all for your help!
Kind regards from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains

Thanked: 363I bought some Kiehls pre shave oil called Light flight, it's ok but I bought this over 2 years ago when I first started shaving with a DE, I can say it does nothing for me infact at first my skin hated it and began to breakout in hives/pimples, then after that it stopped, but I don't use the stuff unless I haven't shaved in a week ( this doesnt happen very often) I'd say Gunner is right on point here, it's way expensive for the results you get, better to buy a nice set of hot barber towels and you will see much better results. I find the Ikea hand dish clothes (red, blue or black stripped ones) to be the best bang for the buck their like 79 cents. Get about 10-20 and you will have a week's supply.
cheers

I got some Art of Shaving preshave oil and it worked pretty good...
I called them and said I had allergies and sensitive skin, and wanted to know what was in their preshave oil. (which is true, just not to any known oils)
They gave me the ingredient list, so I made some myself. It's a lot cheaper that way, and it worked just as well.
That being said, I haven't used it for a long time, and forgot the recipe.

Personally, I find that using Shave Secret before lathering up is helpful in avoiding nicks.

Thanked: 190Preshave oil
I think its expensive for the size and performance. It does make the first pass a bit smoother. I replaced preshave oil with Castille Soap which has a lot of good oils in it already and I lather up my Col. Conk soap on top of it.
Castille soap costs a lot less per ounce and goes a lot further. I also use less Col. Conk Soap to shave. So I am saving on two issues.
