Ray, just to let you know I received the soap this afternoon, it has a very nice fragrance. I'll look forward to lathering up with it, and will send you a PM in a few days to let you know how it has worked out for me. Thanks.

Nice soap. Good lather, pleasant smell (which lasts throughout the shave unlike the glycerin shoaps I've tried.) I received it Wednesday and shaved with it Thursday and Friday. I didn't shave today, as my Revisor bit me this yesterday. I'm looking forward to giving it another go tomorrw, after I've healed a bit more. Did anyone know how close a Revisor can come to passing the hanging neck test?

Thanked: 293I got the soap Saturday but didn't get around to using it until today.
I'll give an honest review because I know that's what you're looking for here. Let me give a little background on my preferences first so you can understand my review. I love Tabac's lather. It's tight, and the individual bubbles are not noticeable to the naked eye. It's so tight that it's almost like a cream consistency, and you can't see your face through it (opaque) when you lather up. This is what I look for in a lather. Speick has the same qualities on the cream side of the house.
First, the smell is great. You really nailed it here. It's got the perfect amount of strength and it really fills the room and makes lathering very pleasant. I love the smell.
Second, lather. On my first go-around, I swirled the brush vigorously the way I normally do on the top of the puck. I then transferred the loaded brush to my pyrex bowl and tried to whip up a lather. At first glance, the lather looked great -- high peaks and plenty of it. Looking closer, I noticed the lather was particularly airy, and I try to avoid this when building. I could see the individual bubbles in the lather (some bigger than others). When then moved the lather to my face, it had the consistency of dish soap and evaporated quickly. I've never had this problem with any of the 10-15 soaps I've tried in puck form. Maybe this soap requires a little more attention and whipping than what I'm used to.
So, I washed my face off, emptied my bowl, and cleaned out my brush and tried it again. Since I face lather most of the time, that's what I tried. I loaded the brush with lots of soap. This time I tried to make the brush drier thinking that maybe the first time I had too much water, but when I lathered on my face the soap had that same consistency. I can see my beard through the lather (not opaque).
So I took my freshly honed Robeson SurEdge (thanks Ron) and shaved my cheeks. The soap provides a decent level of slickness, but not what I would call "cushion". In other words, the feel of the blade was very much evident. In subsequent passes I found the lather inadequate for XTG/ATG. I didn't feel like I was getting the lubrication I needed and so I didn't want to run the risk of razor burn. I lathered up with some Speick to finish the job.
Let's call this a preliminary review after one shave. I am going to try it again next time (probably tomorrow night or Wednesday morning). I plan on trying to give it a little more attention to the lather building process as I feel like I might be able to work past the airy lather stage into something with a thicker consistency.
I'll provide another update once I get there.
Special thanks to Ray for sending it out... I wish you the best of luck on your soap making, and I hope you find my review useful.
Cheers,
Ogie
