Thread: Mother Mabel's Gentlemen's Shaving Soap

I have posted a reference to this soap somewhere but it deserves its own thread.

I found the %SUBJ% in one of our Whole Food Market stores. It was packaged in a nice resealable tin container and only cost $5.99 so I gave it a try and I am glad I did! It is made of vegetable glycerin base, coconut oil, goat's milk, french clay and essential oils and has a rather faint yet easily detectable "Balsam scent" that I like a lot.

The best thing about it is its performance though. I am a face latherer and this soap leaves both D.R.Harris and Crabtree&Evelyn soaps in dust. I like my lather rather thin and well behaving (as opposed to some who need a consistency of whipped cream), and this soap lets me do exactly that; it is very easy to control. It makes the blade glade over my face with ease yet gets me very close shaves. It does not have a tendency to dry out at all, it stays well moist during a shave. Irritation? Not at all AFAICT.

If you see it in your store, give it a try. I am not sure how it will do in a scuttle or mug, but for face latherers, it is a premium soap to go to for a very affordable price.

Thanks, I will definately give it a try since I am always looking for reasonably priced quality soaps and/or creams (I think most of these items are way over priced). I am a bit confused by the ingredient list however.

You cannot make soap from glycerine, so I presume the "vegetable glycerine base" is really some type of soap base that contains added glycerine.

Is the coconut oil the fat that was used in making the soap or is it added fat (i.e. super fat).

And of course, it makes no difference whether the glycerine is of vegetable or animal origin, its the same chemical regardless.

Thank you for the correction, I accidentally left out the word "base" (I've corrected my original post). IMO the added fat comes from the coconut oil and perhaps from the goat milk, too?

Cool... there's a whole foods right by work. I'll see if they have it in there.
