Default Good soap for sensitive/oily skin?

I started breaking out with Tabac, so I switched to Mitchell's, now I'm breaking out again.

I'm going to stop using the pre-shave oil, but if it isnt that does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Mike

My skin is the same way. I've had luck with Crabtree & Evelyn Sandlewood soap. I haven't tried their cream yet.

I am not a dermatologist, but I have consulted a good number over the past 40 years. I have come to the conclusion that skin problems are best solved outside the actual shaving routine. What works for me(!) is Dr Hauschka's product line. You might want to take a look at their take on skin characterisations, and how they approach problematic skin. Using their skin treatmen products, the only problem shaving products can give me is dry skin due to lack of moistursing (easily fixed with Hauschka's skin oil).

My pharmacist (who has massive skin problems) swears by Avène (I reviewed their ingrown treatment which works wonders - for me).

As always, however, skin is personal, and these products may not work for you at all. Try to obtain samples, and see what works for you.

    Regards,
    Robin

If you have bad skin DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT put any pre shave oil on it! That is the worst thing you could do. Stay away from oil and try the Mitchells again with a hot towel as prep.

+1 on the advice not to use pre-shave oil under your lather.

I've had that with Tabac at first as well, but it seems it's very forgiving to me now that I don't use pre-shaves with it.

I have to say though, for any skin that is sensitive or suffers from break-outs, use Trumper's Rose and if necessary use the Coral Skin Food with it. There is nothing milder around for my skin - it's my go-to soap and I can't say how lucky I am to have used it as my first soap.

Several of our soap people have unscented soaps that should be good for sensitive skin. Kiss My Face also has an unscented cream that would be good.

    Default Oily skin

I have oily, sensitive skin and a tough beard.

Institut Kerite soap works well for me.

Some of the lemon scented creams work well also.

Coates cream worked well. But it is impossible to find. They may be out of business. Anyone know?

There are three basic types of shave soaps: glycerin, vegetable oil soap with a bit of clay and stuff that is hard to pronounce soap.
    - Williams is one of the hard to pronounce ingredients soaps --
there is a reason they have been shipping it for 100 years.
    - oil and fat based soaps are made with an alkali and are irritating to some
    - glycerin soaps are less irritating but do not lather as well.

Perfumes and fragrances of all types are a risk if you break out so go for the unscented versions. Oils like avocado and olive spoil so go for a fresh puck from a busy shop.

Pick one type of soap and give it a week... if it does not work
    try another.

Step one: wash your face with a bit of brush and soap lather, rinse it

Step two: apply the brush to the face and work a good shaving lather on your face.

Step three: Shave only with the grain -- ignore the reverse second shave. No need to have a close shave that gives you a rash.

    Step four: rinse rinse rinse
Step five: rinse rinse rinse and pat dry with a CLEAN dry towel.

I cannot say CLEAN dry towel (heck boil it) often enough.

    skip days...
