Hello
I am just taking a survey to see what is everyone's favorite shave soap and why ?
I have tried seven or eight of the "TOP" selling soaps available. My vote goes to Institut Kerite. It is a French soap with shea butter. It lathers well, does not irritate my skin and provides a smooth shave. It last a long time and has a plesant scent. I use a SRD bowl and a Simpson pure badger brush. This combination works well.
Mitchells Wool Fat. Nothing like it IMHO
I don't want to name a favourite as such, but if I found myself with just Wool Fat, that'd be fine.
MWF for the win
My two current favourites are MWF (actually Kent here, but same thing), and Dr. Harris Arlington...but if I had to choose one it would be MWF.
It's a decent price, lathers well, and has FABULOUS glide and moisturizing properties, IMO.
All that said, there are still far too many soaps I haven't tried; I still haven't even tried anything from MamaBear...that coffee scented one sounds too good to be true.
Gentlemen:
Through the years, I have lathered up with scores of shaving soaps, everything from Mitchell's Wool Fat to Tabac. They all have their own qualities.
I must offer two names as my favorites, however, since I find them equal in every way and, therefore, prefer not to choose one over the other.
Provence Sante Verlaine and Institute Karite, both French, hold healthy amounts of shae butter, which does wonders for the skin. They create luxurious lather, have great cushion and glide. Their scents are floral and subtle, exuding a sense of clean and fresh. I can't say enough good things about these fine soaps.

Obie
Thanks Jimmy I have been out of state in a hospital recieving treatment for my cracked spinal implant. They have tried a fix for it and I had to lay in a bed at the hospital for 3 months. But I am doing better.
Thanks
Mark
http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...ving-soap.html - incredibly expensive, but in my opinion the best soap in the market. It really is more of a cream, though. South of that, MWF, SRD, and Mühle/Edwin Jagger "Aloe Vera" in no particular order.
If I had to pick just one puck, it would definitely be MWF.
Wow, sorry to hear about the back. :(
I really like MWF, but am allergic so cant use it very often. My go-to daily soap is usually between prorasso (white tub - mainly in the summer when its hot), or just plain old tabac.
Naturally curious, I looked into whether I could get these from Fendrihan, which is one of the few places to order from in Canada. While they don't have either of these, they do have the Province Sante Classic; have you tried the classic? If so, do you have any comment on the scent?
Thanks, Obie.
Hello, Vulcan:
I have not tried the Province Sante Classic, but I would assume it has most of the same properties as the Province Sante Verlaine. Rasage Poulin, in Canada, I believe carries Province Sante Verlaine. Also, in the U.S., you can get it from Westcoastshaving.com, BullGoose, I believe, and Details for Men. Good stuff, this.

Obie
Right now, Cade.
Tomorrow, who knows.
Hard to make up my mind. Among quality soaps, I honestly don't see the huge performance differences a lot of people see, so I like all of the ones I've kept. The lather may look different, but the shave and post shave feel are pretty much the same with a few exceptions.
Some of the ones I like are MWF, Penhaligon's old formula, Prairie Creations tallow, Cade, vintage Yardley, Palmolive, Speick. Speick's probably the best deal on that list.
Anything by Colleen at the Gentlemensquarter!
Good to see you back Mark!
I think that Tabac is just so much of a standard that it gets "favorite" status because it just is, great soap.
Of all the soaps that I have there is only one that is the top of the heap and that is Penhaligon's EF with tallow, but alas it is not made anymore so that is not fair to classify it as a favorite that readers can obtain.
Take Care,
Richard
Thanks to both Obie and McKie!
I'll have to give Rasage Poulin a try.
Highlander, Lime Margarita, Blackberry Sage, and Toasted Almond from TGQ.
I get good lather, good "slick", my skin doesn't dry out afterwards, and the scent is heavenly candy for my nose.
I'd have to go with MWF as well. Its got such great glide and moisturising properties, and I really like the scent too. Very subtle and clean!
Others include Mama Bears Earl Grey Tea, Tabac and Trumpers sandalwood.
Tried MWF today (first time) and liked it, but it dries faster than I'm used to. I have been using TGQ's creams and soaps mostly, Desert Ironwood, Highlander, Oak & Moss, for a few years now. I'm happy with them all :p
I would have to say that vintage Williams is my favorite currently ( have not used too many). I was lucky to find some locally. I then compared it to the currently offering and see what all the fuss is about.
Thanks for the thread now I have a general idea of where to go for my next soap purchase.
Been having good luck with Mama Bear soaps, but I haven't tried much else
MWF for me too. In the beginning I actually hated it. I thought it was the worst soap ever, but I used up all my others and while waiting for the next batch to arrive I was forced to use it. After a week or two I was hooked, and have hardly used anything since.
Geo. F. Trumper Rose Shaving Soap, a nod to my British ancestry. If it were ever unavailable (discontinued after 130 plus years?) I would choose Mitchell's Wool Fat which I rate as 1"A" closely behind the Rose.
This answer is easy for me... Mitchell's Wool Fat.. Hands down!
I love the scent, and it's subtlety... I love that I can whip it up into a mountain of lather.. I love the way my face feels afterward.. And I love carrying on the tradition that's been honored for over a hundred years.
If I could only choose one soap to use for the rest of my life, my choice would be easy!
Let's see, having just recently made the switch from creams to soap I've only tried about a half dozen so far. Of those it MWF in first followed by TGQ.
i love MWF but i keep going back to tabac, i just cant go a week without it. id say MWF is a close second.
Trumpers Coconut Oil soap.
Smell is ideal, TONS of latherability, and super-moisturizing.

So far, MWF is my fave. Love the scent and the way my face feels after a shave - the lanolin really makes a difference. I recently bought Mühle Sea Buckthorn, but keep coming back to MWF.
The answer is the same as girlfriends. I love the one
I am with....
Now my first was Williams, like my first kiss there
will always be a fond memory....
I have five or six that I am dating at present.
Lately I have been shaving with Burt's Bees Bay Rum
enhanced with a half almond size of a shave cream
that is a pain to lather by itself. Together they
make a fine shave lather for me....
IMO Cella soft shave soap is the tops. Tallow and coconut oil based great slick, billows of easy to generate long lasting later and great bitter almond scent. It hits all the bases for me.
I have the throw in Ogalla Bay Rum and Sandalwood. It's been sitting in a Col Conk mug on my counter for a while. I started using it and I'm blown away by the lather I'm getting out of it with my Thater brush. Very thick whip cream like moisturizing lather right out of the mug. It needs no help....
Hard to pick a favorite.
For warm weather, I like the French triple milled soaps - light and "powdery," fresh scent.
For colder months, MWF and Tabac. I think MWF is great, but it just feels heavy, like I slathered some bacon fat on my face. Probably not far from the truth.
When i travel, Valobra stick. In fact it performs great, just not crazy about the scent. Same problem with cella.
AOS sandalwood - excellent tallow soap, and scent is great, but a classic example of in your face too much of a good thing, leaving you reeking of sandalwood like a whore in Mysore. Opposite philosophy from the subtle scents on English and French soaps.
Trumper's Rose and Coconut - I like these a lot, any time of the year.
Pen's EF Tallow 1st - tried it, not much better than the above, at least not for the price. Sold it. Should have kept it the way people have gone crazy about it now that it is gone.
DR Harris - mmm I guess you can say these are my current favorites. They perform great. The scents are nice but subtle, and work well with different aftershaves and EDT's.
Robin, when is Caraceni coming out with a soap?
It's good to have choices.
I haven't tried a lot of them but so far, I think Gentleman's Quarters is as good a soap as any I've used.
I like MWF, it is one of my favorites, tabac for the price can't be beat either. The scents are ok but not anthing to shout about. I would love to try trumpers rose, but not as easy to find.
I wish MWF had a rose scent or any other scent for that matter.
I think MWF does work better with a boar brush, but can get it to work with any if I hold the bristles. Tabac will lather easier with any brush.
Those are my thoughts.
