Talc
I know the barber puts talc on me after the he's finished, but I never really have understood its purpose. Can someone enlighten me?

To keep the shine down, as far as I know. I've used it for that, not really sure if it had any other benefits.

My wife says I look really shiny after shaving and am looking for a cure. Does the Talc make you look paler? The wife says I'm a white boy( a bit o' the irish), and I don't want to look any more ghostly.

Yep, that what the talc is from. I cut down on the glare
of a fresh clean shave

Of course, talc has lots of other uses. If, for example, it's summer and you feel the need to flour the buns to keep the sweat down.
Slightly off topic, I do have a big thing of the Clubman talc. It's very useful, and has that classic clubman scent. Every time I use it, I think of barbershops.

Oh yes it will make you look fairly pale. I have the clubman talc but don't use it too much makes me look like a ghost.
PS. Be careful with the boys heard using it (talc) there can lead to testicular cancer. Who knows but I won't use it.
