Tabac = Thrift Store Smell
Okay, so my girlfriend and I actually went out this weekend and hit up some antique stores and thrift stores looking for some razors. I ended up with one razor.....but I'll save that for another post.
So we went into a couple of thrift stores on her suggestion and they all had the same smell. I could not put my finger on it, but then it hit me....these stores smell just like Tabac!
With that said, I love everything about Tabac. I have used it every other day switching off with MWF and there is no doubt that I like Tabac much better. Does anyone else prefer Tabac over MWF? ...and does anyone else think Tabac smells like a Thrift Store?

Thanked: 1195Fbones24,
I can't say that Tabac reminds me of a thrift store, but there are plenty of opinions when it comes to that soap. Check this out: http://straightrazorpalace.com/soaps...ell-tabac.html. This is from way back when I was first becoming aquainted with Tabac. For the record it is one of my favorite soaps, as is MWF.

Many people are of the opinion that Tabac smells like heaven. I am not one of them. To me Tabac smells like a chain smoking granny. YMMV.

Wow, glad I saw this thread... I am new to straight shaving and after hearing all the rants and raves about it I was ready to jump and buy some. I was having a hard time justifying the $20 anyway so I guess I'll just stick to what I already have!

Fbones24,
I must admit I am not keen on the aroma of TABAC, but because of it's performance, it is one of my most favourite soaps.
Have fun !
best regards
Russ

I really like the smell of Tabac, and the lather. Its definately one I'll replace when it runs out, thats for sure...!
I dont know about liking it more than MWF as both of those soaps are in my top three. I would hate to have to give either of them up, so I guess I like them both equally!

The funny thing that I'm realizing about Tabac after reading all of this is that even though the fragrance is very subtle, it is actually very complex. You get me saying it smells like a thrift store, others say it smells like a chain smoking granny or a make up bag, and still others say it smells masculine like leathery or musky. Whatever it smells like, I think the scent is subtle enough to not overpower even those who don't like it. Surprisingly, I have mixed it with some creams (Alraz Palermo and Kiss My Face Patchouli) and the result was nice.
Whatever it smells like, put me in the "love it" corner. I have been switching on and off, every other shave between Tabac and MWF and to me, the Tabac just performs a little better for me all around.

Thanked: 953TABAC is like the dragon scroll in Kung Fu Panda - men have searched for eons for the secret, traveling long and far..... but there is no secret ingredient. The scent is within you. At least until you fart, and then it is without you.

This soap/cream is probably the most subjective I have encountered in terms of the spread of opinions members have on it, ranging from thrift stores, to grandmothers, can just about tolerate it, to those who actually like it.
I fall into the latter and find it an interesting scent. I can pick up its very natural tobacco flower smell, which IMO is delightful and possibly hints of various other blends such as vetiver within.
I have only the cream which I have read is slightly sweeter than the soap, but I really like it, not to mention its performance is amongst the best. It produces a rich lather, with a little more work than Castle Forbes or Penhaligons and gives plenty of cushion and moisturising.
I just can not contemplate how anyone could have severe hatred of the smell! Dislike is one thing, although I can't get that into my head either! There are far worse scents IMO amongst shaving products!
