Shave Oil Anyone????
I was watching a video off YouTube that started a barber showing how to properly shave and instead of using shaving soap or cream he used a Shaving Oil.
This was the only thing he used and I believe claimed it was made of natural oils that are helpful for the skin. It is said to help the razor glide over the face and helps prevent razor burn pretty good.
This got me thinking about using a shaving oil suppose to shaving soap or cream. Has anyone ever experimented with this or is it only good for cartridges? (He was shaving with a disposable razor)

I tried it once and promptly threw it in the trash. I found that I couldnt rinse my razor properly because the oil made stubble stick to everything. As well it was hard to rinse my face after. Didnt like it at all but maybe someone else has had sucsess?

I see a few radical shaving methods here and elsewhere. Shave with water only, shave with ice water, shave with oil only.
I think myself that man has been shaving with hot water and lather for a long time for a reason. Perhaps I'm just a traditionalist, but tried and true works for me.

Back in the day, when I used to shave with a cartridge razor, I used only shave oil rather than the canned stuff. Now, I occasionally use my own homemade shave oil as a pre shave. This is one product that I will not spend money on as I feel it is unnecessary. I rub a tiny bit of almond oil/peppermint oil mix into my beard prior to lathering.
Honestly, I have prepped with and without the shave oil and I have found no difference in my shave. I occasionally use it because it feels good, adds to the experience and I think it gives some additional moisture.
I would never attempt to shave with just oil alone.

When I first started shaving with a straight, I used olive oil in lieu of soap/cream.
A little bit on a wet face goes a long way.
I found it was alot easier to see the edge of the blade when in use.
It left my face a bit oily at times, but easily removed with a quick wipe post shave.

I'm a newbie shaver. I also have heard of the just oil. I tried it with little success. However, I did find that olive oil before the lather helps the blade slide over a couple of small moles I have by my ear. I have since made my own with one part caster oil and 3 parts olive oil. Also with a little lavender essential oil to take out the olive smell. I found the addition of the castor oil made my skin soft and less likely to dry out during the day. Hope that helps. Oh if you do try it don't go cheap on the E.V.O.O.

I've tried shave oil. It was interesting. Alone, it did not perform to my liking and I would not use it like that. Under lather was a very different story, it really helped give an ultra smooth shave. I don't mess with it much tho, regular lather is usually fine with me and I don't have very sensitive skin. I might use it if I let my stubble grow a while but that doesn't happen too often. If you get dry or irritated skin, it might be an option to look into.

Tried it. Still use it.
I experimented with using only shave oil with DE's. I got a good shave and my skin was left free of razor burn. I did find the clean up to be chore for the razor and the sink. Since then, I still use shaving oil as a pre-treatment, just before I put on the shaving lather. I've heard lots of conflicting theories on the wisdom of using oil as a pre-treatment. So far, it helps me, though.
