I agree that the stuff in cans is total crap, but the theory about its harmful effects on skin is based on what research???

I stopped using it early in college. It took good money away from beer.
I switched to a bar of soap. Ditched the fru-fru body wash and just started using a bar of soap for everything. I never had a problem with razor burn or a horribly bad shave with plain old soap. Granted, up until I started venturing in to wet shaving recently I always shaved in the shower, so that may be some of it.

I wouldn't say that pressurized shave gel/cream is bad for your face, but it doesn't do anything good for you either

Thanked: 235The whole shaving market either was or is a money making scheme. We look down on products that are designed to do a poor job so that we buy the next model, but think of the Gillette marketing scheme. Suck them in with a cheap DE razor holder and then nail them with the over priced blades.
You can even see some marketing nonsense with the straights we used. Many of them were marked with Guaranteed, Barbers use, or various royal endorsements. Then there were other gymics like magnatised blades and some even used 'pyramid power'.

Years before I started using a straight, I ditched the foam/gel and just shaved in the shower after rubbing the bar of soap over my stubble and working up a decent foam that way.
That said, I think the author would be better to direct his energy at the whole disposable razor scheme rather than one small part of it.

Thanked: 1195Yeah, I remember this article. It popped up in a similar thread about a year ago. I'm pretty sure my opinion on it hasn't changed either
IMO this fellow is just as guilty of spreading propaganda as the folks at Gillette.
