In case you don't know the significance, Gary means that he worked on a Nuclear Powered ship and that though his water samples aren't supposed to go through the reactor, there's always a smallllll chance that they could have leaked through from the primary side.

Remind me to tell you my Navy nuke joke someday, if you haven't heard it already. FWIW, I couldn't find lye in the grocery store either, but I did find some at a local, small hardware store near my house. This was a couple years ago and it was Red Devil Lye, but it's another possible off-line source.
