I alternate between the two. I use an ugly, and I mean ugly, home made pottery coffee mug given to me by a friend to build lather most of the time, however, if I am pressed for time, I use soap, face lather and reach for the DE.

They also sell these shallow hand dishes which you can lather in. They are not shaving bowls. I've seen them made of horn. Classic Shaving used to sell them.
Personally, I mostly face lather but I also use my Oskar scuttle now and then.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I usually lather in a bowl, but if I'm in a hurry I'll do it directly on my face to save time.

My puck of soap resides in a bowl, and I load my brush with that soap in a bowl, but I build lather on my face 98% of the time. YMMV, but I find I get better shaves by taking the time and working the lather into the face and beard. It also cuts down on time working the lather once on the face as compared to build in a bowl then work into face.

I use a soap so straight onto the face.
I love the smell of shaving cream in the morning!

Always face lather.
I do not use products any longer that mess with my face lathering, including one very expensive Custom Silvertip Brush.
My Omega obsession likely cultivates my preference for face lathering. They are very good directly on the face with a hard soap.

I face lather, but a few days ago my nephew got me a scuttle that I'm dying to use. So in the future I may alternate, or convert over... not really sure right now.
