Thread: Proraso, dangerous?

I recently read an online review of Proraso saying that after some research it was found that Proraso is filled with hazardous chemicals (to both individual and environment).

Apparently there is a group called the Environmental Working Group that gives Proraso a 9 out of 10 on their hazard scale.

Does anyone know anything about the chemicals in this soap that makes it so "harmful?" Are most other soaps comprised of the same ingredients? Is this review even correct?

The reason I ask is that I was dead set on this being my next soap but I may have to reconsider if this may be physically hazardous.

Its the foam and yes they are right, I see directly butan that is poison.

Interesting. However, please note they are talking about Proraso foam, the same as any other canned goo. Some of the listed ingredients, especially the butanes, are commonly found in aerosol products. It's part of the propellent system. Most of us converted to traditional soaps/creams a long time ago, realizing that the canned goo not only provides an inferior lather, but is bad for the skin as well.

Although I can't be certain I'd be willing to bet that Proraso soap (in the dish) is 100% better for you than their aerosol foam.

I too use the traditional soaps/creams which is what I thought the article was referring.

There is plenty of debate over the preservatives (parabens) in their own right. Question is... will you ever be able to reproduce after applying Proraso shave cream or soap to your face multiple times? And if not, is this also a cheaper alternative to a vasectomy? Whoopee! Talk about economical!

If you care about this issue (whether or not it will actually affect you) then you can find another shaving cream or soap. Maybe find a few organic ones at a health food store, write down the ingredients and do more research? I have Avalon Organics peppermint "cream shave", a non-lathering shave cream that works real nice and seems to be an effective 2-in-1 in that no post-shave moisturizer is needed. Of course, the first few ingredients aren't very natural sounding (behentrimonium chloride?) but hey, you're supporting the nicer side of the shaving products.

The way I see it, we put it on our skin for a little while and they work best if washed off thoroughly afterwards. I like what Proraso feels like, during and after the shave. No discernible irritation. Some people do react to parabens and other ingredients, so YMMV.

P.S. I don't like the idea of triethanolomine, so I'm not entirely carefree about this issue. I had a tube of shave cream with TEA-palmate as the first ingredient. Yikes! I gave it to a "good" (i.e. bad) friend and he liked it a lot. Problem solved!

Axel, I agree, I don't really think it's an amazing chance that I'll ever see any side effects but the thought of putting something with those kinds of chemicals on my face near my mouth is just a bit disturbing.

Had I not read this, I'd of ordered the soap and never been aware and I'd be completely happy. But now that I know, it just changes my game plan a bit.

And this is even if the soaps and creams have this stuff, as mentioned by the others this article only describes the Proraso foam.
