Thanked: 1Turning hand soap into shave soap
Has anyone tried it? Melt a bar of hand soap in a double boiler (will it melt?), add some olive or canola oil, glycerin, fragrance, what else?
I tried VDH Deluxe, didn't like the smell at all. And it is not particularly slick.
Some people here mention "glycerin soap". Not sure I've ever seen it on the store shelves. What should I look for?
Thanks.

I used to use Ivory soap to shave with due to allergies that I later grew out of. All I did was grate the bar of soap into a mug and press it down. When I wanted to shave I'd just add some glycerine and use the brush to lather up. It didn't give the thick, luxurious lather that regular soaps and creams give, but it was a very servicable lather.

Unless the soap is mainly glycerin it won't simply melt or if it does the ingredients can be altered in a not so beneficial way.

glycerin soap is basicly the melt & pour soap sold in hobby shops. hand soap or bar soap would be best avoided as shaveing soap. most bar soap isn't actually soap its detergent. the only soap that might be worth useing would have to be marked as natural soap. with melt & pour soap all you should need is the block of soap makeing base and some essential oils for scent.

Lots of posts about making your own can be found if you search the forums. You can also check out Mama Bear's soaps if you want premade. She does sell the stuff to make your own, too.
