I use Taylors and T&H, mainly, though I have tubes of C&E, L'Occitaine (yech!) and Palmolive, among others.

Basically, I run hot water into the bowl to warm it, and then dump it out, and put about a fingertip sized dollop of shaving cream in the bowl. If I'm feeling ambitious, I will fill the sink with hot water and float the bowl on it to keep the later warm. If I'm busy, I'll stick my brush in hot water in the cup warmer on my counter so that I can jump in the shower.

Then, I let the brush drip, and maybe shake it once. Then I start to brush the cream into a lather, going round and round until I get a lather with only very tiny bubbles, and that is mostly opaque. Then I smear it on my face with my brush and shave.

Just experiment with the amount of water. You'll get the hang of it.

I'm new to creams but I have experimented using Colleen's lavender cream. Today, I ran my brush (Proraso Omega) under HOT water for a few seconds to get it nicely soaked. I took a small (finger to the first joint) amount into my bowl and within just a minute or so had a nice, thick, creamy lather with soft peaks. I will say that as I continued to mix it, it got thicker and creamier.

One think I noticed it not to use just a circular stirring motion. Combine circles with back/forth and wiggling type motions. At least for me, I got a perfect lather doing this and that small amount would allow me to lather my face at least 3-4 times.
