Doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Just make sure you get all the oil off your hands before you pick up the razor, you could lop something off if it slips. And always wear pants when shaving; good shoes wouldn't hurt either.

You know, I think we've actually had a thread discussing the "wear pants while shaving" issue... Who knows, maybe several.

Anyway, I do use pre-shave oil from time to time. I like it more for the nice smell and the feel than for the reason of an improved shave. There are some who claim it will screw up your shave brush, so you might want to take that into consideration (though it has not been my experience, quite honestly).

The Pacific Shave oil is slick, but doesn't smell like much of anything. I think their suggestion of 5-7 drops is a tad low, since some of the oil winds up making your hand oily, rather than your face. The Truefitt and Hill oil that I really like is about 5x more expensive, but smells very luxurious, and is much thicker - a tiny bit will go very far.

I don't think it hurts anything to use it, so if you like it, give it a try. That's part of the fun of all this.

Waste of money if you ask me. Just use a hair conditioner to soften up your hair. It's cheaper, effective and by no means counter-productive.

I thought I was the only one who shampoo'd my stubble every morning!. I'm glad to know I'm not that different.

Ray, not by a long-shot. My ideal pre-shave routine goes like this:
    1) Wash the face to REMOVE the oils secreted by the skin so the hair can absorb the moisture.
    2) Put hair conditioner on for 2-3min to soak up/soften the hair (I strop during this down-time)
    3) Get the blade goin'

So far the only soaps I've used are a cake of vanilla scented soap from Classic Shaving which worked fairly well and I'm currently useing Burma Shave which, I think, lathers up a bit better. I have yet to try pre/post shave products but might try some at a later date.

I've had some luck using it between my upper lip and nose, and occasionally I razor buff with it (using a DE).

pacific shave is a shave oil (use it instead of shaving cream), but can be used as a preshave-oil.

I've also enjoyed my sample of Anthony preshave-oil (got sample at Nordstroms). I like how it conditions my face and smells, and it leaves my face conditioned after the shave is done. of course I have to deal with oil on my hands when I use it.

Anthony preshave-oil is a pre-shave oil (use it before you use shaving cream)

Although, I don't think I'll settle down to a regement for another year
