Default Cosmetic Chemist reviews Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap

Link here: Review: Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap in A Man's Guide to Skin Care

This stemmed from the chemist posting on /r/wicked_edge, a board on Reddit dedicated to wet shaving.

His final verdict is that the soap, "Is a poor choice," goes quiet contrary to my own experience with the soap, and undoubtedly the experience of many others as well.

All the same, it is interesting reading that I thought SRP would appreciate.

thanks for the link, I was shocked by the fact that there are such bad ingredients in it and there has even been ONE person who got facial psoriasis from it, that's one dangerous shaving soap ;-)

Well, preferences is, as we all know, a YMMW thing.
I will keep the Fat in my rotation, as I consider it a true performer with stellar properties

+100 Chemistry not withstanding, I'd gladly use nothing but Mitchell's Wool Fat.

I've never heard of a personal care chemist, besides the Fat has always worked for me. I wonder what he does recommend, maybe Edge Gel?

Breathing the air outside can cause lung cancer over the long term. That doesn't mean that I spend my days holding my breath.

Hey guys! I'm the chemist behind AMansGuidetoSkincare and I just wanted to say Hi and thank you for reading

I know that I can be waaaay too cautious when it comes to products, but my goal is to educate first. The reviews are designed in sort of a "pass/fail" format, but it's comparing their ingredients to the company's claim. Yes in my ideal world, skin care products would be very bland, and boring and not be fragranced, but those are the best for our skin. We can choose a product because of its fragrance, I mean I wear cologne... but my goal is to just educate people on what's actually in their product, and how those ingredients can affect the skin.

Really it's about understanding which ingredients in the product are responsible for what property. MWF is really popular, and a tallow and coconut oil saponified soap IS good! My goal is to help people understand that it's the sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate and potassium cocoate doing the work, not the lavender, pine and clove extracts, to remove some of the mystique around the marketing.

I really hope I haven't come across as condescending because that's really not what I'm trying to do...I just want to put the information out there!

that's on my list of requests to review, and i'm just gonna make a guess here and say that it's going to fail with flying colours!

i do wholly recommend the unscented 365 glycerin soap made by whole foods. It's about 2-3 bucks for 4 oz and it only contains sodium cocoate and glycerin. great product! and people on w_e have have had positive experiences with it too! it won't be as moisturizing as the MWF because it doesnt contain sodium tallowate or lanolin, and it won't feel as slick because it doesn't contain magnesium sulphate (which is also why some people have trouble getting MWF foamy). i'm sure there'll be more products that are great based on their ingredients, i just haven't reviewed many so far.
