Thanked: 0Hard green SRD unsented soap.
After cutting my way through 4 months of my Dads passed down razor, I am excited to find this site and purchase a nice Dovo & Kit. Can anyone please tell me how to get a good Lather out of this hard green soap? I have tried using my brush wet with hot tap water but cannot get a thick lather. I am proud to become a part of this group of old West shaving.
Thanks everyone!

Thanked: 16Can I ask what that is in the picture?
This video helped me understand what I was looking to do when building a lather.

I always Soak the soap with hot water as I shower, then load my brush that has also soaked and shook slightly. I then swirl my brush on the soap until the water is absorbed and there is a really wet lather. I dump whatever is left on the soap into my later bowl and finish lathering there. I always get a good lather and I have enough for a few passes.

David,
I find SRD no different than lathering any other glycerin soap, maybe easier. I'm not being condescending at all, but how much experience do you have lathering shaving soaps? What varieties do you use and what is your usual lathering routine? (Your answers will help us to help you)

Believe me you are not offending me at all! I used regular shaving cream for 4 months when my Father left me his razor, and no idea what I was doing at all. I just really liked using it, then I found this web site a week or two ago; ordered a nice Dovo & kit and have been searching (Wiki?) and learning but could not find how to lather up this paticular soap. I do have 4 months of cutting myself, which by trial and error has actually given me good experience. Now I think it will be 20 times easier! I have a strope instead of a super fine stone!
Thanks Davidflying

This is really great! Thanks for the advice, as a beginner (except the 4 months using a handed down razor, a fine stone, shaving cream and absolutly no other help or knowledge); I am really looking forward to trying this!

The real key for building later with soaps is to not use too much water. You want to load the brush with soap. So, shake the water off at first and start swishing the brush over the soap. After a few seconds just touch the brush to water and swirl some more. Do this 3-4 times and then hit either your face, a lather bowl or the palm of your hand and you will see the lather start to build when you swirl the brush. For more lather, just add a touch of water to the brush again and load more soap. This usually does the trick.
Have fun.
