I do some of both. I load my brush by putting soap chips in a scuttle. Then I face lather. Then I finish the lather in the scuttle. Do a little stropping while the lather sits on my face and then the 1st pass.
I grab the brush and use the scuttle lather for pass 2 & 3.

Thanked: 109When I first used a brush and mug and Old Spice many years ago I could never get it right and there wasn't anyone around to set me straight. When I picked up the brush again I had found SRP and it was a revelation. I began lathering in my hand with Proraso and badger. Then moved to face lathering almost exclusively even when I started using hard soaps with boar. Tried a scuttle but it didn't appeal to me so now I nearly always face lather with everything unless I am trying out a new brush or soap then it I start in my hand as I feel it gives me better feedback while building the lather. Some days I want the scrubbing of bristle and some days I need the soft caress of badge but I have discovered horse hair brushes and they are my new face fondlers. MMHV
