    Default What's the difference?

What are the differences between soaps and creams? What bennifits does one offer that the other doesn't? What are the down sides?

Personally, I don't find too much of a difference between quality soaps and quality creams as far as lather or lubrication. Creams typically lather a bit quicker. the main advantage soaps have over creams is they are typically cheaper and last longer

    Chris,
There is no difference between soaps and creams except in the method used to create lather. Some gentlemen say that soaps give better cushion and that creams better glides. Or is it the other way around? I have not found that to be the case. In the end, it is a matter of preference: some gentlemen prefer creams and some soaps. I dare say that's all there is to it.

Your questions should lead you down a path of experimentation. I have both soaps and creams which I like, however, I do find myself using the creams more often for the ease at which they build lather with the hard water we have here. Half the fun of this hobby is experimenting to see what YOU like.

creams can go downhill after a few years at best if not completely used up..soaps can last years and still perform great..probably because one is much more solid than the other

Buy both, use both. YMMV , but at least you'll have fun doing it. There is no real downside to either genre, IME.

Any idea where I could get a bunch of samples to try different soaps and creams?

Check out Straight Razor Designs, lots to choose from, then there is Mama Bear Soaps, you can easily lose track of time browsing all the different flavors they have available. There are more to choose from, but those two were on the tip of the tongue.
