Thread: A Proraso Moment

Tried Proraso Green this morning. Every time I've ordered from SRD for the last year I've intended to order Proraso and finally I actually remembered it. I think from other descriptions that it is the new formula, and I really like its performance. Nice lather, don't have to use a lot of the cream, and the cooling menthol is a nice change. But, the smell gave me one of those deja vu moments. Some things conjure thoughts of days gone by, and this was one of those. In my minds eye, I could see myself almost 50 years ago, 1965, in San Diego, MCRD, (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) - Boot Camp. Living in quonset huts with no plumbing and having to use a central concrete/adobe building with open showers, and individual sinks lining the walls with open plumbing and each a mirror. Add to that a Drill Instructor standing at the door clutching his swagger stick in both hands as if ready to strike, and his campaign hat pulled down to where those steely eyes peered just under the brim and burned holes in you if you attracted his attention. And as we poured in and out of the door all trying to get through it at the same time and not catch the gaze of the DI who roared obscenities and challenged every poor soul who dared to look at him and then trying to shave in a time that would be an Olympic record and knowing it could never be fast enough, you cringed at having to again make the dreaded exit through that little door and under the gaze of Godzilla in uniform. The old double edged gillette had zinged across your face and weepers would draw attention but you tried to make the perfect shave just in case you happened to be the one poor Marine who got the dreaded shave inspection. Oh well, those were the good old days!! I truly remember them fondly, but what a time for a 19 year old from a small Oklahoma town who had never been away from home. We didn't have Proraso, but what ever we used, it smells the same and gosh, what a flood of memories it caused.

Howard, Thank you for the word on Proraso. I've only tried what I think is the 'old' formula, but I like it quite a bit. 'Good suds for not alot of money - that's always dear to my heart and wallet. Perhaps you could expand the experience of the Proraso and post in the review section? How does it compare to others on:
Ease of loading the brush
ease of making lather
cushion from the razor
glide/lubricity
stays hydrated?

'Seems like much of it is there already, but could be helpful to others w/ so additional description.

I'll give it a try, but give me a few more days. This was my first go with it and I still have the Red also. I'd like to try them a few times each with different razor styles, sizes and grinds. Thanks!

It's amazing what the olfactory senses can bring back memory wise. Glad you enjoyed the Proraso despite the rushed and stressed shaving routine you had in the past. WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION PRIVATE PYLE!

Oldschool scents can't be beat in my opinion. I get memories of my grandpa and grandma's when I use Ingrams shave cream. Thanks to this thread I think I know what I'll use for my shave tonight! Enjoy the red Proraso. First time I used it I was slightly dissapointed as it's different to the sandalwood scents I've grown accustomed to. Fortunately I soon got over that and love it now. Another oldschool classic in the making there...

Howard, what years were you in boot and viet nam? My Dad went through and was in 26 marines. Just curious.

maddafinga, Boot Camp at the very end of 1965 and beginning of 66. Vietnam 1967-68 for that great Tet celebration. 11th Engr. Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, DMZ. Hope your Dad is still with us and, if so, tell him Semper Fi for me.

He is and I will. He was a year behind you I think. 2nd battalion 26 marines but they got folded into the 1st while he was there I believe. I'd have to ask to be certain, but I know he's got a 1st div plaque at home because I used to stare at it trying to pronounce guadalcanal in my head when I was a boy. He was an m-60 gunner.
