Thread: Proraso soap issue?

So I noticed today that while shaving with the proraso Eucalyptus & Menthol shave soap that there was a build up under the blade of my de of what appeared to be hair and soap scum. that wouldn't wash away under water and had to be removed manually. i was just wondering if I was the only one who has had this happen. I should add I guess that my lather was a bit on the dry side today which maybe what attributed to this?

I have only shaved once with my proraso and my DE I did not note any buildup. I will use it tomorrow and see. Your lather could have been dry I have had the same thing happen with my shavette. I found that I have to keep adding water as I made my lather with proraso to get it to stay moist on my face. When I added water to my lather I would get some water on my fingers then let a few drops fall from my fingers into the bowl.

Ok I was just curious to see if I was the only one who has had this issue. I have been using it for the last 2 weeks or so and haven't had it happen to me before today so it might have just been dry

Ya there seems to be a general consensus that proraso and a few other Italian soaps are a bit on the dry side.

I don't know about that soap but I have had it in the past with some others but that was ages ago and I don't remember the brands.

I do recall many years ago they sold this stuff called amazing shave. You would apply it to the edge of your DE and you didn't need any soap. It didn't work and the entire DE gummed up with gunk so bad I had to use a knife to scrape it off.

If your lather is dry that will happen. What type of soap doesn't make a difference.

Proraso is a bit of a water hog that's probably why you noticed it with Proraso.

If you used the proraso pre/post cream that is exactly the issue. the pre/post cream will cause the build up as well as any shaving oils too. other than that maby it was just a thick application of lather that caused it to build up?

Thanks guys I figured it was to dry just thought I would make sure via the forums.

Slather on some proraso pre-shave and whipped up some lather this morning. No build up at all although my razor is hazing white.

The soap/stubble mix is caused by making the lather to dry, as already mentioned but I found that proraso does indeed leave a white haze on everything it touched, the razor, the brush and the bowl. Especially on a DE razor.
You can clean it with some dish soap and a brush but after a while the brush will be full of that crap and needs a good cleaning with diluted vinegar or it will not work as good as before.
I never understood the hype around this chemical loaded soap that smells like coughing syrup, give me tabac, arko or cella over this any day!
