    Default Total Shaving Solution

    http://www.totalshave.com/

Has anyone tried shaving only using this stuff ?
It would be great to get the opinions of an experienced shaver or two.
I have been using it as a post shave treatment to help irritation, and I have started doing a few touch ups after I apply it and it seems to shave pretty well, its also interesting because you can see the actual hairs being cut because they are not hidden in shaving cream.

I used to shave with this stuff all the time with my cartridge razor, beats the canned cream easily.
You have to rinse the blade more because of the oil but it seems make the razor glide very well.

    Sharpy,

I have never used this stuff. Nor do I know anything about it.

Whenever I read such boasting from a product line as —

"For the closest, smoothest, pain free shave ever with no razor burn"

    — I shrug and shuffle off.

If you are using a straight-razor, I think you will find this works well as a pre-shave oil (the ingredients read identical to many pre-shave oils), but you will still need to use shaving soap. I have just started to use a straight-razor and was amazed at the difference that a pre-shave oil made. The first time I used one the razor slide down my cheeks like skates on ice, even though it had been more than a day since my last shave.

If you are using a cartridge razor (or maybe even a twin-blade safety razor) you can get away with an oil like this alone. Over the years, as a cartridge razor user I tried many shaving lubricant solutions, even butter. Butter actually worked pretty good, but all day the lingering smell of butter kept me wishing for a slice or two of toast.

If you're brave enough to try this alone for straight-razoring I hope you will post a note about the results.

I have had a few shaves with it now, and I must say it looks promising. I am hoping a few people with a lot more shave experience with me is brave enough to shell out the $6 or so, give it a try and report back.

I have found that the oil is very good to use instead of soap. A couple of times I lathered up just for the wetting and cleaning. The last time I tried it I just lathered/scrubbed up with normal cake hand soap first, washed it all off then applied the oil for shaving.

I use 3 drops for the first pass, then maybe add a drop or too by the 2nd pass or so if it feels it needs it.
The razor glides over the skin quite smoothly, and cuts hair well. I rinse and wipe the blade every stroke, and splash water on my face every couple of strokes (which is how the instructions suggest to use it).

The really interesting thing is that you can see everything that is going on. You can see every hair that is cut. There is no lather whatsoever, it looks like you simply have a wet face.

Using this oil gave me the confidence to start shaving against the grain around all the tricky spots. Because you can see exactly where the blade is and what is going on, it seems much easier to adjust to the blade catching on hairs/skin etc.
I had no nicks at all using the oil, with soap it seems a little easier to get a nick due to being unable to see exactly where the skin is.

Well I really hope some of you are willing to give it a try, like I said I would love to hear the opinions of some more experienced shavers. I think there is a another similar competing brand, seems to be basically the same stuff for about the same price...

Sounds a bit more akin to Shave Secret with a higher price. I use Shave Secret as a pre-shave oil, lather over it, and it seems to work. Something about shaving with no lather doesn't appeal.

It does sound a lot like Shave Secret, there are probably several similar products.
The idea didn't appeal to me either at first, I just wanted to see how it would go.

I think it is a great alternative, it saves a bit of time, would be great for travelling and is potentially a great way for beginners to see what is going on when starting to shave and also starting to try scythe strokes and ATG.
