shea butter + jojoba oil = darn good
I've been messing around with homemade after shave balms/conditioners. Take some unrefined shea butter -melt it slowly -then add some jojoba oil and essential oils of you liking --let it cool or force cool it in ice bath and you've got yourself something good. I think about 50% butter , 40% jojoba oil and the rest essential oil is about right --- but fix it to your liking. Maybe start out with as little essential oil as possible. You can whip it as it cools to get a light ,fluffy concoction. I guess you can add other complementary butters and oils like aloe, hazelnut, avocado, and the like ---do a little research though --some of these oils go a long way.
Take care with the essential oils --- some can be harmfull and folks react differently to different oils. Good luck.

Pharmacists stock a few fragrant oils (e.g. rose oil) and will add it to any basic skin care cream you like.

Keep an eye on the performance of your brush when using this combination. Jojoba oil tends to build up on a brush somewhat quickly. If you notice it is hot holding water as well as it should, give it a good shampoo to remove any oily residue.

thank you for the advice rtaylor61 ---- I suppose I wasn't clear that I've used this mixture only as a post-shave conditioner and not as a preshave. I bet the shea butter could really gunk up a nice brush. Am I understanding you correctly?

Jaeger,
I mis-understood. There are a lot of shea butter soaps on the market, and over time, I guess could cause issues. But the Jojoba oil...that will definitely build up an oily base on the brush.
