Cream or Soap
I'm sure a lot of this boils down to personal preference, but as a complete Newbie I am interested to hear what you guys think - should I start out with soap or cream, which is better? Any particular brand suggested? I plan on getting a C&E $35 best badger brush and am looking into something to lather.

I don't think you can go wrong with Tabac Shave Soap or Honeybee Spa soap. I don't think you're going to get a unified answer on this one. Maybe you can whittle down your choices based on your skin type (sensitive or not) and your bank account.

I definitely have sensitive skin (and at this point, I should probably try pinch some pennies) Any suggestions?

I have slightly sensitive skin as well --- I like the Honeybee Spa soaps. You can get them here:

I think Tabac Shave soap is pretty good. You can get the soap refill for about $10 at amazon.com.
People say the Provence Sante is the best for sensitive skin. About $10 for refill. You can buy both the Tabac and Provence Sante with container or just the refill. Add about $10 for the container.
On the cheap side, people say the Erasmic line is good.
As far as the creams --- I don't have much experience but there are a slew of good ones. People give thumbs up to the Taylors Avocado for sensitive skin.

Good reviews here ---there's also a section on creams.
If you can say that your price is below $10.00 you can dramatically decrease your choices. A lot of the good creams are over 10 bucks.
Hope this helps.

I prefer Soaps, I just like lathering up a puck. Soaps tend to be less expensive and come in an infinite variety of scents. That said there are lots of great cremes out there awaiting my use SO I can't give a purchase recommendation either.

Whether you go for soaps (convenience) or creams (my preference for moisture) you MUST try Colleen's The Gentlemen's Quarter stuff. Contact her for a price list and get some samples of both soaps and creams from her after you read the descriptions, then tell us what you think. Tell Colleen I sent you.

+1 on Colleen's soaps. First class, original scents, and great lather. A true joy to shave with!
