Thanked: 1081The ref will call it if someone is not intelligently defending themselves.
The worst thing to happen was the introduction of boxing gloves. Back in the days of fisticuffs head strikes weren't as common and then punches were not thrown as hard. (im sure some of the fine gentlemen at SRP have broken a finger or two belting someone in the head in their youth.)
Boxing gloves are designed to protect the hand, meaning you can punch someone as hard as you can and you wont brake your hand. They are also two fold as you can also take more punches to the head without being knocked out. The constant trauma to the head can lead to serious repercussions, think Ali, Freddie Roach, Michael Waston and Gerald McClellan.
4oz gloves typically worn by mma fighters will mean quicker head knockouts resulting in less repeated trauma to the brain, throw in wrestling and BJJ and the head trauma gets lower and lower, effectively making mma much safer to the old noggin. The superficial face cuts we see in mma although gory will heal quick enough, only the fighters pride takes a long time to heal.
I also dont agree with weight cutting for a fight. A lot of fluid is lost and it can take a long time for the fluid around the brain to come back, its this fluid that protects the brain...
