Pasted stropping rule of thumb
Title says it all. I need a rule of thumb for stropping razors on a leather strop with .30 CrOx on it? Number of laps, pressure, etc.
Shave on!

Thanked: 1195Rule of thumb:
Do sets of 5 laps, no pressure, checking after each set. When you feel a noticeable improvement on the TPT stop and test shave. For me this is usually around a dozen laps.
As well, if you used tape for honing the rule of thumb is to tape it for the pasted strop too, though this isn't really as important if using a hanging leather/material strop

Stropping is as per normal. From most posts on crox laps seem to be between 10 & 20
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 375I just recently started using CrOx, and have found 4-7 laps seems to be the magic number for me. More laps than that has made the edge to harsh for me.
I say go 1 lap at a time and test until you find your sweet spot. Again limited experience with pasted stropsCHRIS

Our individual fetishes for our fav. methods can make this controversial, but if I have to do more than 5 - no pressure strokes, I question my stone work. More strokes will improve to a point, but its no substitute for good stone work.
The crox is usually to tone down some harshness - which can be done a few ways. Without knowing your progression, its hard to say much about the best use of crox.

I typically do 20 on CrO, then 20 on FeO, and then strop on unpasted leather for 60 to take out the harshness from the pasted strops. As always, YMMV. I like Ryan's suggestion of stropping on paste in sets of 5 laps and checking after each set--I'll give that a shot next time I need to touch up an edge.
