Thread: Stropping - Technique and how often?

Im sure these have been asked a million times over, however i cannot find them So please bear with me.

How often should you strop your razor?
I got mine back already stropped, and have used it once. Should i strop it before my next shave?
im kinda worried that im going to wreck the edge and be stuck without a razor.

If a strop is nicked, is it going to hurt the razor?

For the technique, just to clear things up. You do not put any pressure on the blade at all, correct? only let its weight fall onto the strop.

If your razor is wider than the strop, how do you get the whole blade without over doing one edge, and not doing the other edge enough.

There is just a bit on stropping

Most recommend, Before every shave, start at 25 Linen / 50 Leather and adjust from there up or down (YMMV)

Some people strop 10 or so laps after shaving to make sure the edge is dry and clean


Bad nicks in the strop should be repaired, either by sanding them off or gluing them down and then sanding

There are some great threads on this forum about stropping (use the search function) and some incorporate videos. Or you can search ing youtube for "stropping a straight razor" and you will get some great hits. Using a strop this is narrower than the blade is what most do, by using an X pattern. I'm sure someone more experienced that I on the forum will jump in and direct you to the videos and other discussions.
