Herb's Yellowstone Compound (Cerium Oxide)
For those that don't know, it has been discussed somewhat:
http://straightrazorpalace.com/advan...-compound.html
I've dug up about every word that's been posted around here WRT Cerium Oxide and thought I'd try some. Appears to have been a great interest here circa 2009/10 and then not so much. IIRC Lynn spoke favorably of the HYC (stick) and Glen was using the "super cerium" finest grade powder.
Two questions:
What's the "general feel" for the stuff now, a few years later. Use it? Often? Special cases? Always? Never? (follow up q's don't count)
What's your method of application to the strop?
thanks in advance (TIA)Buttery Goodness is the Grail

Thanked: 13249Still only using the Super Cerium rated at 99.99% pure
I use it after my Nakayama and after my Shapton 30k that is where I seem to get the best feedback
Leather Bench strop mixed with Bick Leather Conditioner seems to give a nice even application..
As I have said many times in the past, this isn't like CrOx or Diamond it doesn't add hardly any "Sharp" to the edge only "Smooth" at least the powder I have doesn't, I have never tried the sticks...

Thanked: 4828I also have the powder. I have mine on the felt on my hanging strop. To be honest I haven't really decided how much of what it adds to a fresh edge and haven't tried it on one that is pulling. It could be because I'm on a long run of natural stones and they tend to be very smooth anyway. I continue to use it and often try an edge straight from the hones, and then again after stropping. The trouble with that is that they are always smoother even if it is just leather. Perhaps I should go from the hones, test shave, cerium strop and test again. I'll post here if I discover anything in my experiments.
