Thanked: 284While I'm still a novice honer, I'm starting to agree more with Lynn's statement that's something along the lines of he hasn't met a edge that can't be improved with a paste (I think that was Lynn).
I have had some very nice edges with either 12k or jnat, but using the CBN afterwards just takes it to another level. Now, that just may be a testament to my novice honing skills, not sure.
That being said, diamond, CrOx, etc are all diff flavors of doing the same thing, and I think it's another case of finding what works for you.I love living in the past...

Thanked: 13245Honestly ???
I use the most pure CrOx I can get my hands on, then use it on a Leather strop, BUT I don't use paste to "Refresh" or to "Sharpen" I only use it for 7-10 laps depending on the CrOx micron size right after most hones to add smoothness to the edge before regular stropping...
If I wanted to use it to refresh I would get the .50 Diamond and use it on felt, I did an experiment with the .50 and the .25 diamond a few years ago with a very good outcome...
It really depends on what you are after

I am learning to hone and maintain my own razors. In the meantime I send them all out while I practice on a couple cheapy blades. All I'm looking to do with this right now is to stretch out times in between honings, to bring back the edge as it starts to tug a bit. What would be a good combo for this? For me and my shaves, as I'm still a bit new (only been using a straight for about 8 months), I like a smooth shave. Doesn't need to be BBS. I shave the tops of my cheeks and my neck WTG/ATG and the goal is to achieve a close irritation free shave. Irritation free being the main concern.

Thanked: 3215There is stropping on paste for comfort to tune an edge for your beard and skin, refreshing to bring back a flagging edge and there is maintenance.
I look at it like maintaining your car, if you change the oil and do regular maintenance on a schedule you will prevent most future problems. If you wait till the motors knockingā¦ changing the oil will not fix the knock.
So once you get the edge where you want it, you can maintain it with pasteā¦ indefinitely.
Diamond .50 or .25 can refresh an edge if it is not too far gone. Chrome Oxide or .50 CBN will tame an edge and make it a smooth shaver, or will maintain an edge at optimum level, .125 CBN will smooth it a bit further depending on your beard and skin.
You can strop on Chrome Oxide, Cerium and Ferrous Oxide, and or CBN, .50 or .125 daily or a regular routine of every other day, 3 or 4 days or once a week depending on what works for you.
It does take some experimentation and your shaves will improve as your stropping skill improves. The importance of stropping technique cannot be overlooked.
I strop on CBN .50 or .125 daily 20-30 laps and shave off the CBN edge.
