Default Just ordered a Tony :)

I just ordered my first strop from TM. I hope I picked a good one for me. It's the Heirloom #1 BEST Wide 3" Vintage Honey Brown Hanging Strop.

Up to now I've been useing the under-side of my left forearm, seriously.

I used a 'scope to check the alignment of the "teeth" and found that about 10 passes each way with light pressure to no pressure would set them in plane.

I had also tired a disused dress belt but found that it broke off the teeth instead of aligning them.

Any tips from the pros that aren't in the FAQ and such?

    Smile Interesting

You will be very happy with it. I want to order one of his number ones as soon as possible.

That is interesting about the under arm. I'd imagine that a strop works better, but that you could get away with this in a pinch or if traveling. Very cool.

    Glad you're still with us.

I think you'll find Tony's strop to be a small improvement.

Mine's too hairy for that. As for the strop, you made the right decision. I use his latigo for regular stropping and honey brown for my bench hone. Both work wonders for my edges.

Tony's strops are great - I can only highly recommend them, and him in general!

However, I'd like to hear from you and also others - if the forearm works so well for you (better than a belt, which I have used with success) - why do you want to get a real strop to begin with?

For the record - in case something goes wrong, I prefer to slice a strop, not my forearm...

    Cheers

Ha ha, funny you should mention the forearm.

When I started str8 shaving I tried the ol'belt thing, worked fine when I wanted the "shaving the face with the cheese grater" feeling. Guess I should have used a not so old belt. After that failed I started to strop on an old pair of jeans that I have for around the house. I'd through them on after a shower and strop on my thigh for a couple of strokes, then on the inside of my forearm to finish it up. Did it that way for about a year before buying a strop. Don't know why I though of doing that, just happened that why. Still use the forearm when traveling.

Anyway I love the strop a lot more, don't have one from Tony............yet

Hmmm, leather strops in the shape of a forearm.....a hairy side for cleaning the blade, a skin side for finish stropping, hardware made from watch bands......................off to the workshop <g>

I was going to say that I'd give my left arm for one...

Upon reflection it may not be such a good idea
