    Steve,

I think we are talking about the same thing. Arcing or not. My drawing shows more detail than the barber manual photos do, but in the end, I think they are the same. The arcing, as I mentioned before, is primarily a comfort thing. Whether or not that arcing has any significant effect on the outcome as far as a shave ready, stropped edge goes, I don't know.

I've tried both ways and the edge seems as good either way. The arcing just allows me to go faster and smoother which equals more efficiency for me.

I've read some posts where some guys claim they are spending 1/2 hour or more to shave. I take about 10 minutes from start to finish, beard prep, stropping and shave included. I still enjoy the experience, but for me faster is better.

Plus, my wife gives me a hard time if I take longer in the bath room than she does. Ha!

Got it. I think I misunderstood with your comment about the point leading at some point in the stroke shown by the directional arrows in the barber textbook. What you say makes sense to me now.

I was extrapolating a little (or a lot?) from that photo. We'll never know exactly what that barber's stropping stroke looked like, but I was guessing/interpreting it might look like the one I do based on the minimal info presented.

Those pictures on the pdf barber text seem to show heal leading to me and Xpattern stropping. I can't see it being interpreted any other way.
I think the barber you picked your technique up off may have just developed that style of stopping. Might be interresting to run a poll on heal or toe leading.

I've been doing a slight X pattern while stropping but I can see where the arcing Scott mentions that he does would be more comfortable. I might give it a try for a little bit and see how it feels.

So I just went and tried a slow heal leading stropping stroke and it's very awkward for me to do.

I'm posting two drawings I've made (I know, I'm having too much fun with MS Paint!). One depicts my idea of "point leading" the other is my interpretation of "heel leading." The red arrow is one stroke of the X pattern. Do I have this correct?

The apex of the "V" is the elbow as a pivot point.

Well then, I'll leave it to Steve to try the method I described, call it the "Curving" or "Arcing" X pattern if you want. Steve, you tell us if there is any difference.

I tried the heel leading once again, and I can see that I could do it with practice. Now I'm wondering if it really makes that much difference? Hmmmm?
