    Many people here use this technique. You are fine. You can use a straight stroke, X stroke, diamond stroke, windshield wiper stroke, and many more as long as you strop the whole edge you are ok.

    I am fairly new to this hobby too and when stropping now after pointers I don't get caught up in the speed as much as the proper way and going slow......the "X" pattern if done slow is easily done and with time you get a bit quicker and quicker. Good luck.
