Thread: Loom Style Strop Replacement Leather ???

I recently acquired in a bucket of rust type deal what looks like one of those Streicher loom style strops with Chromium Oxide applied to the leather.

The leather looks pretty old and grungy and I'd probably like to get a replacment leather loop.

It looks a tad "longer" that the loom strops that I've seen pictured on various sites...

Is this something that can be bought as a replacment part?

Can Tony Miller or anyone else make one for me?

In a nutshell.......nope. <g>

I have a few vintage ones as well as two brands of new ones. After fooling with making replacement leather and looking into making them from scratch it is cheaper to just buy one new again. The leather is rather thin and usually glued to a cloth backing.

Is this true even of the Livi looms?

I'm sure the Maestro Looms are easily repaired by him or whoever he contracts with to make them. The Jemico and Striechen ones are made in Germany in large numbers and none of my suppliers lists replacement parts. At $39 to $59 retail it is unlikely worth their time. On many larger produced items you are dealing with vendors who subcontract their work to other, who may in turn do the same again. once too far from the source it is hard to get any replacements.

A Livi on the other hand ir, well hand made and I am sure he could supply whatever part is needed.

Ath this moment in time, I have no idea who the manufacturer is.

I assumed Striechen becuase that seemed to be the most similar. At first glance I could not find any manufacturer's name, logo, or trade mark...

From looking a little closer to the pictures of the Streich-Riemen loom strop on shavingshop.com, I'd say that mine was a tad longer, and also seemed to be of slightly better quality manufacture.

The better quality aspect could be due to the fact that my loom strop is many years older and was made when ALL things were better made....

The leather loop is actually functional, it just has years and years and layers and layers of grunge on it and a fair amount of nicks and cuts on it...

At first glance the the leather loop appears to be ALL leather and not cloth backed. It looks like that the leather loop was installed with the rough side outward and chromium oxide had been applied to all of the leather surface....

Except for the grunginess of the leather loop strop, the hardware part is in perfect shape.

I've recoated the leather loop strop with chromium oxide, and I look forward to trying it out!

Perhaps I might eventually try to "de-grunge" the leather loop by scraping it with a pumice stone that they sell on classic???
