Question what to choose what to choose?

    Hello everyone,
I reently bought a razor and am in need of a strop. I am considering Tony millers new heirloom double sided "nothing fancy" bench strops. It is 3 and a quarter inches wide and ten long. Since i am still a newbie i thought this would be good due to its size and price. Also i would like one side pasted to prolong the edge on my razor. The big question is what paste should i use? he can pre paste with Amplex Diamond Abrasives in 3.0, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 micron or with 0.5 micron Chromium Oxide or 1.8 micron Boron pastes. Theyre are so many choices to pick from. I looked around a bit and was thinking .5 chromium oxide..what do you guys think would be best? All help is welcome, thanks.

Hi TJ, if you're looking for something as your daily/pre-shave strop, I'd go with one of Tony's hanging strops. I think they're a lot more convenient to use. I'm sure others could give you better reasons too.

For touching up an already "sharp" razor, I do like the bench hones. I like the 1.8 BC and .5 CO. The 1M Diamond and .5 Diamond pastes would serve you well also.

If you're looking to sharpen a truly dull razor, you're going to want a couple of hones (eg. Norton 4/8 combo).

I know others with more experience will offer opinions, so check out additional responses here before you buy. enjoy!

I had e-mailed with TJ before and directed him here where I think he found a nice vintage, shave ready razors from another member at a very good price. I know TJ said he was on a budget so the Double Sided Bench hone gives him two tools in one. Flat, beginner proof stropping on the red latigo side and a pasted option for a few weks down the road.
True a hanging strop is better for daily use but that would leave him without a quick path to a refresh without buying more stuff (not that I'd mind <g>).
I would likely go 0.5 Amplex or 0.5 Chromium on the pasted side.

    Lots of choices.

True enough. If you have to choose one tool, the bench hone will get the job done well.

Thanks everyone! This place and the people here helped me out alot. Expecially Tony, id like to thank you for all your help. An order for the bench hone pasted with some .5 Chromium oxide is on its way soon. Thanks again.
