    Default Strop Shocker!!

I am considering making my own strop. I couldn't decide whether to use hemp or flax linen. I made an enquiry with the company that sells flax linen. I wanted prices for 3" and 2 1/2" for 5m of each.

I received a reply that the flax was out of stock and they wouldn't be getting it back in unless I ordered... (wait for it)... 3000m!

    Anyone need a 3Km strop?

Think hemp will be the way to go!

Our departed friend Neil Miller said that the linen he used was going to become unavailable in the near future. Might have been from the same source ?

Yeah there was a nicely woven hemp material I fell for a few years ago but it too had a minimum order of 2000 or 3000m. I don't seem to be able to justify that amount of material just yet.

Just make a sail boat in your front yard, then you need the hemp to make the rope for the rigging and anchor.

The strop I favour most is my Westholme which has flax linen. I was hoping to use it too, but it looks like Hemp is going to get a try. That's widely available and pretty reasonably priced. Who knows. It might become my new favourite. Only one way to find out!

Ive wanted to make a strop for a while. Good luck finding any linen, I've tried loads of places but no luck. If I manage to get any I'll let you know.

Didn't we discuss this before? Har har.

The only real source might be some fabric stores or bakers cartouche which is still made from genuine linen.
