Thread: Strop Storage

Does keeping the strop in the bathroom have a negative affect from the moisture and all? Is it better to have it in a drier room?

A few years ago I noticed water spots on my strop, and wondered how they got there. Found out pretty quick that my wife would fling her hair up into a towel when she got out of the shower, hence the spots. Kinda made me a bit angry at first, but now I just make sure I always have the linen facing outward. No problems any more Other than that I don't have any other issues with moisture on my strop.

I'd say no--at least not in my experience. As long as the bathroom is well ventilated and people aren't showering all day long, I'd say your strop will be fine.

Also, the humidity in the air will reduce the frequency of your needing to wipe down your strop with a damp cloth--which you occasionally should be doing to add moisture back to your leather.

Probably depends a lot on how humid the bathroom gets. A good exhaust vent can clear a bathroom quickly. I read somewhere that you should run a fan for 20 mins after showering to vent a bath.

There are high CFM fans, a bit pricy in the $200 range, I have one that is making noise and have been pricing them. I suspect high CFM would make a big difference. An alternative is a timer that replaces the fan switch, about $20 and easy to install. Had one in my old home, it worked great and will probably install one with the new fan.

Constant humidity is probably not good for leather and will rot it if too much. I would just keep an eye on it and move if it stats looking funky.

I keep mine on the bedroom door knob.

To me hot and humid means breeding ground for bacteria. Maybe its OTT but I keep mine in a closet away from humidity, bright light and dust. I have a few nice strops so I dont take any chances, plus it takes seconds to take out and put back.

I keep mine away from moisture. Leather and moisture don't mix.

I used to hang mine in the gunsafe before.....NOW, I shall do same, but each will have it's own cover!



I dearly love the one with the O's. It shall house my Neil Miller strop!

Mines been in the bathroom since I got it, 4 or 5 years ago, can't see any negative affects.

Mine have been stored in my bathroom for several years, (as have my razors), and I have not had any moisture problems. This includes 3 different houses. The climate of the region might have something to do with it, as it's not humid here.
