Diamond Pastes and Paddle Strops
I found a good suggestion for using a paddle strop with 0.5-micron chromium oxide compound to bring back the edge on my dovo. I went to classic shaving, where all my gear comes from, and they have a Dovo Paddle Style Razor Strop, with one side being Russian leather and the other side coated with red sharpening compound. This latter side is supposed to restore an edge that has become dull through normal use, then you are to finish with the Russian leather side instead of a hanging strop.
They say that the red sharpening compound is a 1.5 grit as opposed to the 0.5-micron chromium oxide compound mentioned above. Does anybody have any experience with this Dovo Paddle Strop? I'm wondering if I should get it or find another paddle strop and get the 0.5-micron chromium oxide compound to coat it with.

Thanked: 5personally, i don't like the sound of "hollowed core and Felt Padding under the leather provide just the right amount of resistance or "Spring" to maintain good blade contact and "Draw" while stropping" you want a nice tight surface so as to not round the edge
and at $49.99 it's pretty expensive
i have also heard of people being dissapointed with those pastes and 1.5 won't give you the nice finish 0.5 will
the one place which no one is dissapointed with is Tony Miller at http://shop.thewellshavedgentleman.com/
he offers a lot of different paddle strops.
i would specifically look at this one:
http://shop.thewellshavedgentleman.c...6&categoryId=4
you can have both sides pasted (i got mine with 1.0 diamond and 0.5 chromium oxide) or one side pasted and the other side with his awesome latigo (looks like there'll be more options soon)
superior craftsmanship and they are just plain handsome
$36.95 for unpasted (you can coat it with whatever you like but you'll have to find/buy it)
$42.45 for one side pasted with 0.5
$47.95 for 2 sides pasted with 1.0 and 0.5
you can buy chromium oxide at http://handamerican.com/ (but the site still isn't up)Last edited by edk442; 06-05-2007 at 12:57 AM.

Thanked: 5nice choice! i hadn't mentioned them as they are somewhat pricier. i would love to have a 4 sided strop but i prefer the stability i get on a 2" surface. now if only he made a 2" 4 sided paddle strop...

Actually my 4 side combo with one pasted side is still less than the Dovo at $49.95.
It measures 1 3/4" on each side which works pretty well. Not sure if the 2" would offer much more than extra weight though. I'd go bigger but the 8/4 rough sawn wood I use cleans up at 1 3/4. I'd have to go up to the next rough sawn size which means planning a lot of wood away. Weight really adds up after a while and I can easily sense the difference between the 1 3/4" and my old 1 1/2" models.

I have a 4 sides paddle strop from Tony with 3 pastes - 3, 1 and .5 micron. The 4th side is red latigo leather. This paddle is light, yet sturdy and very handsomely made.
Good pick.
