Thread: Lynn's modular pad strop

Gents,

I'm planning on getting a modular strop from Lynn Abrams.

On Straight Razor Designs, it says the strip comes with the following modules:

2 Pieces Hard Wool Felt

1 Piece Straight Razor Designs Premium 1 Leather

1 Piece Straight Razor Designs Scrub Leather

1 Straight Razor Designs 15 Carat .5 Diamond Spray

The site also gives the option of getting extras modules.

I'm pretty new to straights, so I'm not sure if I need extra pads, but since I don't live in the US and a relative on vacation is bringing it to me, I'd like your opinions.

So far I've got a King 1K, a Norton 4K/8K and a Shapton Pro 12K.

Currently I'm using a 2" cowhide strop made in Germany.

So do you think I need extra pads or sprays? SRD has CrOx and .25 diamond spray.

How should I use the pads both daily and when honing? Do you use hard wool, scrub leather and five leather before every shave?

I bought a CrOx stick with mine. I have diamond spray on one felt and CrOx on the other. This is a very nice paddle strop. I don't use the felts or scrub leather daily, just after a razor is honed or when it needs to be refreshed. I think you will like yours.

Did you get the diamond spray and the CrOx both in 0.5 micron?

If I were you I'd add the .5 CrOx spray to your purchase, instead of a crayon. It is easier to apply evenly. I use those treated felt pads only when a small touch up is needed, which is very infrequently. I use either the scrub leather or a hanging piece of linen or other fabric strop before the leather. The only other thing you may want to add (or substitute) is the English Bridle leather pad they sell (or used to), but it isn't a necessity.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. I did it because I wanted to compare the spray versus the crayon. Most people would probably mix them up. I did this when a was a noobie.

I'd have to say that they both perform similarly. If anything, I like the fact that the CrOx is green and it is easier to see the coverage on the felt. I'll use them both and probably get a different grit diamond spray next time. Keep in mind I'm still a rookie and have much to learn.

I bought mine with the English bridal, I wish I had gotten the CrOx spray but I can later on, the diamond spray works good but my razor seems to like CrOx better.
I've only had this strop a couple of weeks an I love it. The premium leather is great once it breaks in, the English bridal is breaking in slower but is still very good.

I have had this strop for a couple years and I like it a bunch. I use the English Bridal the most. I also experimented with the felt and sprays and unfortunately did not like the results too much honestly. I got better performance by taking the scrub leather and refining the nap with a palm sander until it was really fine. I used that to paste it with an SRD Chromium oxide crayon and it worked remarkably well. Very versatile strop system.

I love mine. I would say don't get extra pads because, unless you cut one, they will last for years. IMHO.
