When applying a diamond paste to a paddle strop should I use protective gloves or what is the recommended method?

You can if you want. I just smear it in with my thumb. I lose my fingerprints for a few days but that's about the only side-effect.

The less you use the better. If you can just barely tell the paddle is pasted, then that's about right.

I just smear it on with my thumb as well. I also find that the abraded flesh worked into the strop does a good job of conditioning the leather
